MATERIALS:
  • Hook: 5.5mm
  • Yarn: Size 4 Worsted Weight Yarn – approx. 70 yds main color and 20 yds contrasting color. Berroco Vintage is used in these photos
  • Darning needle and scissors
ABBREVIATIONS:
  • st = stitch
  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • Yo = yarn over
  • RSC = reverse single crochet

FINISHED SIZE:

0-6 months – 6.5” wide x 6” high

6-12 months – 7.25” wide x 6.5” high

PATTERN NOTES:

This easy pattern uses the reverse single crochet stitch (RSC – otherwise known as the crab stitch) for the crochet edging.

RSC: chain one and insert the hook into the next full stitch to the right (opposite the regular direction). Pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through both loops on. First reverse single crochet made. Continue in the same manner around your entire piece, until you reach the beginning.

BABY HAT PATTERN

Size 0-6 months

With main color, ch 3.

  • Round 1: 9 dc in 3rd ch from hook (skipped chs count as dc), join with sl st in top of first st. (10 dc)
  • Round 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a st here and throughout), 2 dc in each st around, join with sl st in top of first dc. (20 dc)
  • Round 3: Ch 2, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 1 st; repeat from * around, join with sl st in top of first dc. (30 dc)
  • Round 4: Ch 2, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts; repeat from * around, join with sl st in top of first dc. (40 dc)
  • Round 5: Ch 2, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts; repeat from * around, join with sl st in top of first dc. (50 dc)
  • Rounds 6-12: Ch 2, dc in each st around, join with sl st in top of first dc.
  • Round 13: Change yarn to contrasting color, ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st in top of first sc.
  • Round 14: Change yarn to main color, ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st in top of first sc.
  • Round 15-19: Change yarn to contrasting color, ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st in top of first sc.
  • Round 20: Change yarn to main color, ch 1, rsc in each st around for the edge (see above pattern notes for steps), join with sl st.

Fasten off, and weave ends.

Size 6-12 months

With main color, ch 3.

  • Round 14: Change yarn to main color, ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st in top of first sc.
  • Round 15-20: Change yarn to contrasting color, ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st in top of first sc.
