Crochet Scarf Patterns

Table of Contents

It’s where every crocheter first starts their journey – with crochet scarf patterns. There’s no better crochet pattern to start with when you’re just learning how to crochet. Okay, I guess you could practice on a crochet dishcloth pattern but come on…borrrring!

While scarf patterns are great for beginners, that’s not to say that they can’t be dynamic and challenging too. I’ve got easy and free crochet scarf patterns on the list below but also more advanced pattern designs for crocheters looking for more of a challenge to dig into.

Crochet scarves are also the perfect choice when you’re looking for a quick pattern because honestly, who doesn’t love this fun crochet accessory? Choose from the classic scarf, the infinity scarf pattern, the stunning triangle scarf, the crochet cowl, the blanket scarf, the crochet scarf wrap, the crochet pocket scarf, and more.

What Crochet Stitch is Best for a Scarf?

This is definitely a discussion that merits debate but it really comes down to what you’re trying to achieve. If you want to keep things simple, stick with basic crochet stitches like single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc) and half double crochet (hdc) stitches.

If you’re looking for something with texture, consider stitches like the bobble stitch, waffle stitch, and puff stitch. But if you’re looking for more advanced options then consider stitches like the star stitch, scallop stitch, and feather stitch.

What is the average size of a crochet scarf?

There’s a lot of range within the sizing of crochet scarves and often nothing that standardized. However, the typical crochet scarf should be at least long enough to wrap around the body one time. Or another way of sizing is the make the scarf approximately the same size as the recipient. Generally speaking though, the average adult-size scarf ranges in size between 55″ – 70″ long and 6″-12″ wide.

Besides all the great options for crochet scarves, they also make incredible gifts. They can be made in any color, any style and there are also great crochet scarf patterns for men too. Many of the scarf projects on this list below can be started and finished on the same day!

Scarves are a perfect idea when you’re in a pinch for time but want to give a handmade gift. Also, once you learn how to crochet a scarf, you’ll never want to buy one ever again.

Around The Post Crochet Scarf

Front post double crochet – it’s not any harder than a regular double crochet but it looks a lot different. You end up with pronounced vertical ridges that look more like knitting than crochet. Which is great for ahem those of us who can’t knit but still like that look. Instead of going through the loops at the top of the stitches you go around the double crochets in the previous rows, aka the posts. By alternating between the front and the back you crochet a scarf that looks the same on both sides.
